Create a resource pack for parents who want to help their trans kids as they navigate daily life.
Mission Dossier
What practical resources exist to help parents support their transgender children through everyday challenges, from school to healthcare to just being a family?
Children who are members of the LGBTQ+ community, and trans and gender non-binary kids in particular, are navigating an increasingly hostile landscape. More and more US states work to pass laws restricting gender-affirming care for minors, and many schools are rolling back protections for trans and non-binary students.
Research consistently shows that family acceptance is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes for trans youth. Parents who show support by using their child's chosen name and pronouns, connecting with other supportive families, and learning about their child's legal rights can make an enormous difference.
But finding trustworthy, practical resources takes time that stressed families don't always have, so a curated collection of digital resources can make it easier for them to get started.
This package is for parents and caregivers of trans and non-binary kids who want to be supportive but feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to start.
Compile a resource pack of 5 or more links to organizations, guides, toolkits, or other resources that would be genuinely useful to a parent of a trans or non-binary kid. Your collection should cover a range of needs rather than focusing on just one area.
Think about what a parent might actually need help with:
- Understanding what their kid is going through
- Connecting with other families in similar situations
- Navigating school (rights, accommodations, dealing with pushback)
- Finding affirming healthcare providers
- Knowing their child's legal rights
- Handling extended family or community reactions
- Supporting their child's mental health and wellbeing
You don't need to cover all of these. Pick the ones where you find the strongest resources.
For each resource, please include:
- The name and URL
- A 1-2 sentence description of what it is and why it's useful
NA
Essential skills:
- Ability to evaluate whether a resource is credible, current, and genuinely supportive
- Ability to write brief, clear descriptions
To give you an idea of the kind of resource you're looking for, here's one example:
- Trans Youth Equality Foundation - Resources for Parents: Provides peer-to-peer support from other parents of trans kids, and a free 20-minute connection call for families who don't know where to start. The tone is warm and honest without being clinical, making it a good entry point for parents who don't know where to begin.
